In this lecture, Henrietta Heald will discuss the life and work of Charles Parsons and his family. Charles was president of the Institute of Physics 1923–25 and his father, William Parsons, the 3rd Earl of Rosse was the great astronomer who was president of the Royal Society 1848–54. William built the Leviathan of Parsonstown which was the largest telescope in the world for more than 70 years. Charles’s daughter, Rachel, was the co-founder and first president of the Women’s Engineering Society. These people will form the basis of Henrietta Heald’s talk.
