Sixth Form Lecture – The complex beauty of fractal geometry

November 8 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

- Free

Dr Matteo Sommacal, Department of Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering, Northumbria University

With the aid of computer graphics, Matteo will explain how fractals – the shapes that come out of fractal geometry – can be defined as geometrical objects characterised by two properties: self-similarity, and non-integer dimension. Fractals differ from the ‘smooth’ figures of classical geometry, such as circles or triangles, as they turn out to be ‘rough’ and infinitely complex.

Examples and images will illustrate the intriguing and counter-intuitive beauty of fractal geometry, and the profound impact fractals have had in science and art.
