Your child has been using our Light, dark and shadows loans box in school. NUSTEM loans boxes are linked to STEM careers and contain original objects and replicas that can be handled and used as part of classroom activities. While using the resources in the boxes, children get the opportunity to try out and explore some of the skills, techniques, equipment and ideas that STEM professionals use on a day-to-day basis.
Our light, dark and shadows box has a dark den, variety of lights and torches, a light box and different transparent and translucent materials to encourage children to investigate light, dark and shadows.

Careers link – what is a lighting technician?
Lighting technicians design and implement the lighting for live and pre-recorded media events such as concerts, television programmes, films and public events. Lighting is crucial to any production, setting ambiance, mood and style to the event.
The production director of an event decides what they want from the lighting and explains this to the lighting technician. It is the task of the lighting technician to use their creativity to bring that vision to reality.
A lighting technician needs to collaborate with stagehands, riggers and electricians. They set up the configurations of lights which are remotely controlled by a control board. During a production, the lighting technician may need to sit at the board and observe pre-determined cues to set different lighting effects in action. Sequences of effects are often configured with computer programming.

Your child may have looked at these careers at school.
Each career has 3 personal qualities to focus on. We call these attributes. We want to show children that they already have the skills that they need to have a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths (STEM).
