Reece Summer School 2017

Ten students. Three weeks. All engineering.

“The Reece Summer School helped me understand what’s out there and how big international businesses are.” – Faye “I saw how physics is diverse and can support routes into engineering.” – Melinda “I know where physics can take me now. I didn’t before.” – Beth. "I’ve realised there’s more than one route into engineering.” – Melinda “I didn’t realise the extent of opportunities in the North-East until now!” – Naz

The School

For the third year, Think Physics and the Reece Foundation will welcome ten female AS-level physics or first year Level 3 Engineering students, for an intensive summer school programme.

Across three weeks, students will work with Northumbria University researchers and engineering industry experts on a range of projects, culminating in a final presentation of their work to the wider community, including family and friends. There’ll be site visits, workshops, talks and individual and group research. The school is designed to:

  • Build confidence and expertise.

  • Offer an insight into physics and engineering-related research at university and in industry.

  • Inspire the continuation of studies in an engineering-related discipline.

The time, the place

The Summer School is based at our Think Lab on the city centre Northumbria University campus. There’ll be several visits off-site to engineering firms and other relevant places.

Starting on 17th July, the School will run weekdays to the 4th August. It’s important that applicants can plan to attend all days of the School.

A bursary of £100 per week per student is available, with a small discretionary fund to support those with particularly onerous travel or other costs.

We’re looking for:

  • Year 12 girls studying A-Level Physics or Level 3 Engineering

  • Resident in the North-East of England.

  • Students who would like to find out more about engineering

We’ve capacity for about ten students on the course, and we expect places to be highly sought-after. Places will be allocated to individuals who make the most compelling case for the benefit they think they’ll see from participating, with priority given to students from NUSTEM partner schools.
