Seaton Burn College
Hello Seaton Burn College! Over the next few years we hope we’ll see you often. We’ll bring you the most fascinating, surprising, and ridiculous things we can think of, and together we’ll explore the world around us. We’ll look at how things work, how they behave, and how you can build things that behave as you want them to.
We also hope you’ll visit us at our base, Think Lab in Northumbria University, where we can go even further in thinking like scientists and engineers.
Below, you’ll find a summary of the things we’ve done with you so far. Click around – you might just spot yourself in one of our galleries.
Lenses revision 26 May 2016
I hope that you found the lenses revision session helpful. It’s an area of physics which has lots of applications – particularly in medical physics, imaging (cameras) and astronomy.
Here’s a link to a PhET simulation which lets you move an object around and see where the image is formed.
The NHS careers website has examples and descriptions of different jobs involved in medicine, including medical physics. For example, Clinical photographer, Opthalmologist and vision scientist, and healthcare assistants.
And here’s a short film about what a dispensing optician does.
Finally, if you’d like a blank copy of the graphic organiser we used, you can download a copy (GraphicOrganiserLenses) and then use it to see how much you remember about lenses.
Year 9 Seaton Burn Careers Day – 22nd Feb 2016
Hello Year 9,
It was great having the opportunity to work with you today and discuss future opportunities using physics and STEM. I hope you consider these areas and if you would like further information or support, please contact Think Physics or leave a comment below. You had some great questions, if you have anymore again add them to the comments box below.
The presentation we showed you (and available below) is packed with videos showing what is currently happening and future ideas. All require people who have STEM skills and the academic understanding of STEM, which can be linked to a variety of roles including research, development, design, production, marketing and promotion to name but a small few.
