Exploring links between health & air quality with students from secondary schools in Mexico City
About MANAPRE
The Mexico City and Newcastle Partnership on Health and Air Pollution Research and Engagement (MANAPRE) project has established a network of researchers working together to better understand links between air pollution and public health in Mexico City. This city has historically been known as one of the most polluted cities worldwide. Pollutants such as lead, sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and particulate matter frequently exceeded national ambient air quality standards.
Working alongside Professor Anil Namdeo and Professor Jane Entwistle NUSTEM has developed a set of 3 lesson ‘inserts’ and a bespoke MANAPRE STEM Person of The Week aimed at upper KS2/ upper KS3 pupils. The materials have strong links to the Mexican science curriculum around the following topics:
- Things in air / Cosas en aire
- Monitoring air pollutants / Monitoreo de contaminantes del aire
- Health impacts of air pollution / Impactos en la salud de la contaminación del aire.

The materials are available in English and in Spanish and so could also be used with students who are learning Spanish as an additional language.
