Wednesday 12th January 2022 EYFS Glaciologists
Today Nursery and Reception children became Glaciologists and investigated melting ice. Why not try our NUSTEM melting ice activity at home? All you need is some ice cubes and bowls to put them in.
Hello Castletown, we’re NUSTEM. We’re based at Northumbria University, and we work across the region supporting children, families and teachers in exploring science, technology, engineering and maths. We’re particularly keen to help people recognise that careers in these STEM subjects are available to them.
On this page you’ll find a summary of the things we’ve done with your school, and links to follow-up activities you can do at home.
Our work with Castle Town is part of the Exploring Extreme Environments project, funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

After school today, KS2 families became wind turbine engineers, designing the blades for wind turbines and testing them to see which shape would turn the turbine the quickest. Click here for more information and activities.
Today Year 5 became poets. They read the Ice Cores poem, written especially for this workshop by Katrina Porteus and found out more about they way Katrina writes her poems. Year 5 then used the scientific knowledge they developed in the last session to write their own poems. Click here to find out more.
