This resource is designed to accompany the Science for Families course delivered by NUSTEM or one of our partners. It’s a six-week parent and child course delivered in primary schools.
You’re welcome to use the resources for other purposes, but they might not make quite as much sense!
We promised you a video of someone walking on a swimming pool filled with oobleck. We’re guessing you didn’t believe us.

Before you go…
You’ve watched the video and promptly filled your bath with cornflour. Well done – you are a true scientist (and perhaps in a bit of trouble!). Before you head off elsewhere on the internet, try this next fluid related experiment.
All you need are a few items from your kitchen…
A seven-layer density column
The people over at Steve Spangler Science will show you how to experiment with the density of different liquids to create a really cool, seven layer, density column. You’ll need:
- A tall clear glass (the taller the better)
- Honey
- Corn syrup
- Washing up liquid
- Water
- Vegetable oil
- Rubbing alcohol*
- Lamp oil*
*Don’t worry if you don’t have these two, you can do it without!
