Bailey Green Primary School

Hello Bailey Green, we’re NUSTEM. We’re based at Northumbria University, and we work across the region supporting children, families and teachers in exploring science, technology, engineering and maths. We’re particularly keen to help people recognise that careers in these STEM subjects are available to them.

On this page you’ll find a summary of the things we’ve done with your school, and links to follow-up activities you can do at home. You might also want to check out our calendar of upcoming events:

Space Careers Assembly 26 March

Thank you Bailey Green for a brilliant assembly on Thursday and some fantastic answers to the questions that I asked you.  I hope that you enjoyed learning more about the jobs that you could choose in the future, if you would like to have a career in space.

We talked about the science behind the solar eclipse and aurora.  Here’s a video showing what the aurora look like – I hope you enjoy it.

We also looked at great space careers: astrobiologists, astrophysicists, satellite engineers, aerospace engineers, geologists, researchers, astronomers and many, many more!

Lastly, we watched a video about the Virgin Galactic and an entrepreneur called Richard Branson.  The video talked about Richard’s dream of flying people into space, and how this dream is nearly a reality.  Maybe one day we’ll all go into space.

So remember, dream big, think big and work hard. You can achieve amazing things now and in the future.

See you soon!

24 March: Bubbles

Bubbles 9Bubbles.

Small bubbles. Large bubbles. Long bubbles. Round bubbles. Red bubbles? Green bubbles? How many different sorts of bubbles did we see today? How were they different, how were they alike?

Joe blew lots of bubbles with you today. If you’d like to carry on blowing bubbles at home we’ve loads of ideas and inspiration about different things you can do with them at our bubbles page. Click here, or click the picture to the left.

Everyone got a pot of bubbles to take home to constitute science at home! Do Tweet us any photos of your experiments – @thinkphysicsne

Also – see you if you can spot yourself in Joe’s gallery of the day:

6th March: Floating Goats

The most scientific of the Billy Goats Gruff

The most scientific of the Billy Goats Gruff

We all know the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. But very few people know that the young Billy Goat was actually a scientist – a naval architect to be exact.

Year 1 at Bailey Green spent this morning helping the young goat design, build and test a boat that would help the goat family cross the river. I was really impressed with the young scientists and their ability to solve problems and record results!

Take a look at what we did in the gallery below…
