New York Primary School

Hello New York, we’re NUSTEM. We’re based at Northumbria University, and we work across the region supporting children, families and teachers in exploring science, technology, engineering and maths. We’re particularly keen to help people recognise that careers in these STEM subjects are available to them.

On this page you’ll find a summary of the things we’ve done with your school, and links to follow-up activities you can do at home.

March 6: The Solar Physicist

This afternoon Luke and I have been working with New York’s Y5 children. We’ve used spectroscopes to look at the light from the sun, and explored ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR). If you’d like to find out more about our Sun and solar physics take a look out our page here.

Here are some IR pictures we took during the sessions.

23 Jan: Marine Engineering

This morning we’ve been working with Y4 at New York Primary School. We built over 20 boats that sailed their way across our water trough. You can see what we got up by checking out New York’s Twitter!

13th June: Medical Physics

We’ve been with Year 6 today learning all about applications of Physics in Medical care. You’ve seen X-rays, an infrared camera and a pulse oximeter. Can you remember what they all do?

Head over to the NUSTEM Medical Physics page to learn more.
