Hello New York, we’re NUSTEM. We’re based at Northumbria University, and we work across the region supporting children, families and teachers in exploring science, technology, engineering and maths. We’re particularly keen to help people recognise that careers in these STEM subjects are available to them.
On this page you’ll find a summary of the things we’ve done with your school, and links to follow-up activities you can do at home.
Today the first Reception class became meteorologists and discovered how rainbows are made. They also investigated the wind using wind socks and kites. To find out how to make a wind sock at home, using a plastic bottle and old plastic bags, go to our Wind Sock NUSTEM at home activity.
This afternoon Year 4 became palaeontologists, exploring fossils and using pollen samples to investigate how the earth’s climate has changed over millions of years . For more information and activities to try at home, click here.
After school it was the turn of the Key Stage 2 families to become wind turbine engineers. For more information about wind turbines and some activities to try at home, click here.
After school, Key Stage 1 families became wind turbine engineers, designing the blades for wind turbines and testing them to see which shape would turn the turbine the quickest. Click here for more information and activities.
