Hello New York, we’re NUSTEM. We’re based at Northumbria University, and we work across the region supporting children, families and teachers in exploring science, technology, engineering and maths. We’re particularly keen to help people recognise that careers in these STEM subjects are available to them.
On this page you’ll find a summary of the things we’ve done with your school, and links to follow-up activities you can do at home.
On Monday Reception children became lighting engineers and on Tuesday so did the Nursery children, investigating light and shadows. To make your own shadow tubes at home using only a torch, a toilet roll tube, some cling film and a small piece of paper, go to our STEM at home page.
Today Year 1 children became materials scientists and investigated materials using weight, electricity and magnets. Why not investigate how strong the materials in your home are by trying our NUSTEM at home Bridge Building activity?
This afternoon it was the turn of the second Reception class to become meteorologists and investigate the weather. Why not try a sunny weather activity and make a reflective mobile? This just uses anything shiny you can find around your home.
