Mining Geologist

A mining geologist is a professional who applies the science of geology to mining. They ensure that minerals, rocks, and gems are extracted from mines, pits, and quarries, allowing maximum profit and minimal problems. They must first locate the minerals using tools such as aerial photographs, field maps, and geophysical surveys. The mining geologist then maps and makes computer models of the area and records geological data to produce accurate details of the location, structure, and distribution of minerals in a deposit. The mining geologist determines the life span and how profitable the mining venture is likely to be by assessing the grade and structure of mineral bodies.

Wetland Biologist

Wetland biologists manage and protect wetland resources, studying the relationship between the wetlands environment and the life that lives there. They implement wetland conservation techniques, enforce regulations and provide consultation on construction projects in wetland areas. They create detailed designs for wetland identification, creation, and restoration, perform habitat assessment and conduct research on wetland processes. They may work in zoos or parks, parts of conservation programs or in public education.

Primatologist

Primatologists study non-human primates from biological, anthropological, psychological and perspectives and may work within biology, medical research, anthropology or zoology. Primatologists seek to observe human-like behaviours, explore primate psychology, or study primate culture. They may work in zoos and other domestic environments caring for the animals or observing their behaviours and habits in the wild. Some primatologists work in laboratories assessing the biological backgrounds of apes and other human-like primates.

Animal Behaviourist

Animal behaviourists apply the principles of animal behaviour science while studying how animals interact with each other and their environment. They research an animal’s methods of communication, instinctual responses, learning methods, psychology, and group interaction skills. They often work on veterinary referral, helping the owners of companion animals such as dogs, cats, horses, rabbits and birds resolve behavioural problems through diagnosis of the problem behaviour and application of an individual behaviour modification program.

Regional Climate Data Researcher

A regional climate data researcher manages, analyses and prepares regional climate data for climate impact models and visualisation services. They use scientific data handling and experienced scientific interpretation of the climate sensitivity and uncertainties. They provide solutions to regional climate changes and climate impacts and make seasonal predictions on a regional scale.

Climatologist

Climatologists are atmospheric scientists who study the Earth’s climate. This is the long term weather pattern of a particular area. They collect and analyse data from sources such as ice cores, soil, water, air, and plant life to find patterns in weather and learn how those patterns affect the Earth and its inhabitants. Climatologists apply their research to address local climate issues or to determine how to work different in climate conditions. They work as weather forecasters, develop new measurement tools and statistical models, conduct simulations, and translate findings into more easily understood terms for the general public.

Metallurgist

Metallurgists deal with extracting and processing metals. They work with metals such as steel, aluminium, iron, and copper and often work with alloys (metals that are mixed with each other or other elements) to create materials with specific desirable properties. Metallurgists can work in a number of areas including civil engineering, aircraft manufacture, automotive engineering and the defence industry. They usually specialise as chemical metallurgists, extracting metals from ore, physical metallurgists, studying how metals behave or process metallurgists, designing metal parts.

Materials Engineer

Materials engineers research materials used in industry, like carbon fibre reinforced plastic, polymers, ceramics or alloys, and test their behaviours under different conditions. Materials engineers understand the properties and behaviours of different substances, from raw materials to finished products and use non-destructive testing methods to investigate materials, like electrical conductivity, or tolerance to heat or corrosion. Materials engineers combine or modify materials in different ways to improve the performance, durability and cost-effectiveness of processes and products.

Zoologist

Zoologists study the anatomy, behaviour, classification, evolution and distribution of animals. They work with animals in the laboratory, in captivity or in their own habitats. Examples of the work of zoologists include animal conservation and welfare, controlling pests and diseases, drug development and testing and improving livestock in agriculture.

Ornithologist

Ornithologists are a type of zoologist who study ornithology, the branch of science devoted to birds. They study the physical appearance, behaviour, songs, flight and migration patterns of birds and also look at the conservation of birds and their habitats.
