Power Plant Operator

Power plant operators manage and maintain the machinery that generates electricity. This may be produced from hydroelectric energy, solar or wind power, nuclear energy, coal or gas. Power plant operators regulate and distribute the power amongst the generators. They monitor the voltage and electricity flow from the plant to meet fluctuating customer demands throughout the day.

Sound Engineer

A sound engineer works specifically with the mechanical and technical aspects of recording, mixing, reproducing and manipulating the electronic effects of sound. They control microphones, sound levels and outputs along with their experience of acoustics to produce the best quality of sound suitable for purpose. Sound engineers don’t always work in music. There are specialist areas of sound engineering to become involved in, such as studio engineering, live sound engineering, game and audio design or audio post engineering which involves mixing and editing sound for television and movies.

Condensed Matter Physicist

Condensed matter physicists use the laws of quantum mechanics, electromagnetism and statistical mechanics to study the macroscopic and microscopic physical properties of matter. They are particularly concerned with the behaviour of this matter during condensed phases, the most familiar of these being solids and liquids. The study of condensed matter physics involves measuring various material properties with experimental probes. Condensed matter physicists also use methods of theoretical physics to develop mathematical models that help in understanding physical behaviour.

Geomagnetist

Geomagnetists are a specialist type of geologist who study the magnetic processes of geological features and the Earth as a whole. They study the geomagnetism caused by the Earth spinning on its axis as it orbits the sun and the magnetic processes caused by mountain ranges, ocean trenches and shifting tectonics which effect on the geomagnetic field of the Earth. This research informs the understanding of formation of the Earth and other planets. It is useful in industry as studying the magnetic fields of the Earth can help predict where resources might be situated.

Observatory Scientist

Observatory scientists work at observatories. These are places, which have very big telescopes and use them to look at other stars, planets and galaxies. They understand what can be seen within the night sky or try to understand it and look at data from the night sky. They then explain these things from the night sky to groups of people that go to the observatory.

Wildlife Technician

Wildlife technicians assist with the management of wildlife species and the preservation of habitats. They assist wildlife biologists collecting biological specimens, surveying animal populations, compiling data for evaluation, maintaining and calibrating scientific equipment, and writing detailed reports. They may also be involved with trapping and tagging animals to monitor their movements within a designated area and evaluate their health, looking for signs of illness. Wildlife technicians provide care for animals that have been captured for observation in a laboratory setting. Additional duties may involve preserving animal habitats and maintaining roads and trails to keep the wildlife areas accessible.

Attributes: collaborative, passionate, self-motivated

Naturalist

A naturalist is a type of biologist who studies the impacts of living species on each other and the environments in which they live. Naturalists are less concerned with genetics and more concerned with relationships. They look for evolutionary markers to explain why a certain attribute may have been beneficial or what environmental conditions may have led to the rise of genetic diversity within a species. The core of the work a naturalist does is in the field rather than in the lab, taking field notes, photographs and written records and compiling them for analysis.

Animal Behaviourist

Animal behaviourists apply the principles of animal behaviour science while studying how animals interact with each other and their environment. They research an animal’s methods of communication, instinctual responses, learning methods, psychology, and group interaction skills. They often work on veterinary referral, helping the owners of companion animals such as dogs, cats, horses, rabbits and birds resolve behavioural problems through diagnosis of the problem behaviour and application of an individual behaviour modification program.

Climatologist

Climatologists are atmospheric scientists who study the Earth’s climate. This is the long term weather pattern of a particular area. They collect and analyse data from sources such as ice cores, soil, water, air, and plant life to find patterns in weather and learn how those patterns affect the Earth and its inhabitants. Climatologists apply their research to address local climate issues or to determine how to work different in climate conditions. They work as weather forecasters, develop new measurement tools and statistical models, conduct simulations, and translate findings into more easily understood terms for the general public.

Polymer Scientist

Polymer scientists use chemical polymers to build useful and unique materials such as Kevlar, Teflon, fiberglass, polyester and nylon. Polymers are long strings of several molecules in a repeating pattern. Polymer scientists can manipulate a polymer’s properties depending on what types of molecules they use and how they’re connected. To perform these kinds of tasks, scientists use knowledge of organic chemistry, structural patterns and sometimes computer modeling programs to help plan the polymer synthesis. Some polymer scientists work on creating new polymer materials and others develop existing polymer designs.
