Solid State Physicist

Solid-state physicists study rigid matter, or solids using quantum mechanics, crystallography, electromagnetism, and metallurgy. They study how the large-scale properties of solid materials result from their atomic-scale properties. Solid-state physicists study the mechanical and thermal behaviour of solids including the thermal conductivity, the amount of energy that must be absorbed by a solid to produce a given change in temperature and the melting points of crystals. It is the electrical properties of a solid that are of most interest, in particular its electrical conductivity. This knowledge is used in the production of transistors and semi-conductors.

Magnet Engineer

Magnetic engineers design magnets or machines and devices that use magnets. These may be used in computer data storage, compasses, doorbells and alarm systems, microphones and speakers, motors, electrical generators and electrical transformers. They are also used in medical equipment such as MRI scanners. After a magnet has been designed, magnet engineers define manufacturing processes and testing strategies then analysing test results and present them in the form of operating instructions and manuals.

Optical Engineer

An optical engineer researches and develops new technologies related to the science of light. They study the behaviour of light and see how it can be manipulated to enhance electronic systems and equipment. Optical engineers work in all areas of optics using different techniques to design lasers, build telescopes, create fibre optics communication systems or work with microscopes, computer chips or consumer electronics. This requires them to understand and apply the science of optics in substantial detail in order to know what is physically possible to achieve.

Petroleum Geologist

Petroleum geologists deal with natural reserves of combustible fuel on both land and sea and are responsible for gauging how much of this can be extracted. They discover the location and amount of useful fuel in sediments or reservoirs using technology such as geochemical analysis, ground-based sonar and satellite mapping. Petroleum geologists interpret geophysical information, conduct field studies, interpret and implement drilling strategies for extraction and create post-project reports. Petroleum geologists may work with oil companies in the supervising of the oil extraction process.

Naturalist

A naturalist is a type of biologist who studies the impacts of living species on each other and the environments in which they live. Naturalists are less concerned with genetics and more concerned with relationships. They look for evolutionary markers to explain why a certain attribute may have been beneficial or what environmental conditions may have led to the rise of genetic diversity within a species. The core of the work a naturalist does is in the field rather than in the lab, taking field notes, photographs and written records and compiling them for analysis.

Habitat Restoration Engineer

Habitat Restoration Engineers are landscape planners working from an ecological perspective. They make ecological alternations to a landscape to return it to a former state, usually for ecological repair or conservation reasons. Habitat Restoration Engineers examine and identify the ways that human actions or natural events put pressure on ecology and the wider ecosystem. They identify the potential hazards and damages that they cause. They work with a variety of environmental scientists such as ecological planners, geologists, botanists, herpetologists and ornithologists on the engineering of new landscapes and recreation of ancient landscapes.

Military Weather Officer

Military Weather Officers are responsible for directing weather forecasting activities and integrating weather conditions into the planning of military missions as well as disaster relief and humanitarian operations. They integrate current and forecasted atmospheric and space weather conditions into operations and planning. Military Weather Officers also develop, direct and coordinate meteorological weather studies and research.

Climatologist

Climatologists are atmospheric scientists who study the Earth’s climate. This is the long term weather pattern of a particular area. They collect and analyse data from sources such as ice cores, soil, water, air, and plant life to find patterns in weather and learn how those patterns affect the Earth and its inhabitants. Climatologists apply their research to address local climate issues or to determine how to work different in climate conditions. They work as weather forecasters, develop new measurement tools and statistical models, conduct simulations, and translate findings into more easily understood terms for the general public.

Polymer Scientist

Polymer scientists use chemical polymers to build useful and unique materials such as Kevlar, Teflon, fiberglass, polyester and nylon. Polymers are long strings of several molecules in a repeating pattern. Polymer scientists can manipulate a polymer’s properties depending on what types of molecules they use and how they’re connected. To perform these kinds of tasks, scientists use knowledge of organic chemistry, structural patterns and sometimes computer modeling programs to help plan the polymer synthesis. Some polymer scientists work on creating new polymer materials and others develop existing polymer designs.

Materials Engineer

Materials engineers research materials used in industry, like carbon fibre reinforced plastic, polymers, ceramics or alloys, and test their behaviours under different conditions. Materials engineers understand the properties and behaviours of different substances, from raw materials to finished products and use non-destructive testing methods to investigate materials, like electrical conductivity, or tolerance to heat or corrosion. Materials engineers combine or modify materials in different ways to improve the performance, durability and cost-effectiveness of processes and products.
