Environmental Restoration Planner

An environmental restoration planner conducts laboratory and field tests to monitor the environment and investigate sources of pollution, including those affecting health. Their work includes inspecting establishments, including public places and businesses to ensure that there are no environmental, health, or safety hazards and setting up and maintaining equipment used to monitor pollution levels. They will collect samples of air, soil and water for laboratory analysis and perform scientific tests to identify and measure the levels of pollutants in these samples.

Meteorological Technician

Meteorological technicians are responsible for the collection of meteorological information. This includes observations of different elements such as temperature, atmospheric pressure, visibility and clouds by using various aids such as computers, radar and automatic weather stations. After a meteorological technician has checked all the information, it is sent to weather, air navigation and marine offices. Weather offices at airports are also manned by meteorological technicians.

Patent examiners inspect the technical and legal aspects of an invention in a patent application. Patent examiners get to see the latest developments in technology. They look for any evidence that the invention already exists then work out how it works, what it does, and what the new and inventive aspect of the invention is by using their technical expertise. Patent examiners then use this information to search through specialised databases. They then analyse the patent application and identify any legal issues that may be wrong with the application. They will then continue to work with the applicant to bring their application to a state where it meets all the legal requirements and a patent may be granted.

Materials Scientist

Materials scientists study the structures and chemical properties of natural, synthetic or composite materials, including glass, metals, rubber, ceramics, alloys, semiconductors and polymers. They focus on the production and design aspect of chemical physics and determine ways to strengthen or combine materials or develop new materials with new or specific properties for use in a variety of products and applications.

Veterinary physiotherapists work alongside veterinary surgeons to help reduce pain, improve mobility and prevent recurrence or injury in animals. The most common animals referred for physiotherapy are horses and dogs including working animals such as race horses and greyhounds. Other animals such as cats and some farm or zoo animals may require physiotherapy. Veterinary physiotherapists will plan exercise programmes, use manual and electro-therapy methods to reduce pain and help with movement, apply massage and hydrotherapy techniques and give advice on changes to animals’ environments.

Herpetology Veterinarian

Herpetology veterinarians specialise in the care of reptiles and amphibians. As with a general veterinarian, herpetology veterinarians diagnose and treat sick and injured animals, perform operations, carry out tests such as blood analysis, X-rays and scans, provide care for an animal in veterinary hospitals and carrying out regular health checks for reptiles. Environmental scientists gather samples and observational data in the field and conduct tests in the lab. They analyse, soil or air samples to find the type, concentration and source of the pollution caused by industry or agriculture. The environmental scientist will then identify if that contaminant source has the potential to affect or harm individuals and communities. They then identify ways to manage, minimise or eliminate any negative impacts of the pollution.

Conservation Scientist

A conservation scientist is someone who manages the overall land quality of forests, parks, rangelands and other natural resources. They work with landowners to devise ways to use and improve the land while safeguarding the environment, for example, advising farmers on how they can improve their land for agricultural purposes and to help control erosion. Conservation scientists monitor forestry and conservation activities to assure compliance with government regulations, choose and prepare sites for new trees using controlled burning, bulldozers, or herbicides to clear land and monitoring forest-cleared lands to ensure they are suitable for future use.
