NUSTEM back at Ivy Road

This week Year 1 and Year 2 have been material scientists. To become a materials scientist at home using ice and household materials, visit our Insulating Ice STEM at home activity.

EYFS have been investigating light ans shadows. Why not try our Shadow Tubes STEM at home activity, which uses only a torch, toilet roll tube and cling film.

Naval Architects in the Owls Class

We had a fantastic session with the Owls class this morning, designing, building and testing boats. You can try our Naval Architects STEM at home activity, using only a piece of tin foil and some coins.

NUSTEM have been working with the Year 5 classes to create poems based on the science of ice cores. Year 5 have done a fantastic job and their poems along with more information and activities can be found here.

Building a wormery with Year 2

This morning NUSTEM visited Year 2 via Teams to help the children build a wormery and find out more about worms.

Year 2 children brought home a leaflet showing you how to build a wormery at home.

If you want to know what to do with your wormery next and for stories, interviews, activities and more information about worms, click here.

Wednesday 11th March A busy afternoon at Chillingham Road!

This afternoon Year 1 became botanists and investigated Venus Fly Traps. To find out more about botany, click here.

Then Year 4 became materials scientists, testing the properties of different materials and deciding what they could be used for. Click here to find out what materials scientists do and for some fun activities you can do at home.

After school, Key Stage 2 families worked together to design, build and test wind turbine blades to see which was most effective. For more activities to try at home, click here.

Wednesday 11th March Reception Family Space Explorers

NASA/JPL-Caltech

This morning, Reception children and their families took a trip to Mars with Little E the robot rover from the book “Are we nearly there yet?”. When they got there they designed the Mars landscape and built Mars rover vehicles to explore this new world. For more information about the robots in “Are we nearly there yet?”, more books about space and for activities for you to try at home, click here.

Tuesday 10th March Reception Bubbles and Key Stage 1 Family Systems Engineers

This afternoon the Reception children had a great time investigating bubbles. Can you ask them if they can remember the shapes of the bubbles that were created by different bubble wands? To find out more and try bubble activities at home, click here.

After school KS1 families became systems engineers, and designed, created, tested and improved marble runs. Click here for more activities to try at home.

Monday 9th March KS2 Wind Turbine Engineers

This afternoon, Key Stage 2 families worked together to design, build and test wind turbine blades to see which was most effective. For more activities to try at home, click here.

Friday 6th March STEM week @ Balliol

We were back working with families for a second day today, with more families working together to design, build and test wind turbine blades to see which was most effective. For more activities to try at home, click here.

After that, Year 5 found out how environmental modellers collect and use data to predict the future. To find out more about environmental modellers, how to help the environment and for modelling activities you can try at home, click here.

Thursday 5th March 2020 STEM week @ Balliol

We are busy at Balliol this week, with workshops over two days. Today Reception Class learned all about magnetic and non-magnetic materials by investigating magnets. To find out more, click here.

Year 2 became design engineers and learned all about recycling, reusing and reducing in their sustainability workshop. Visit National Geographic kids and NASA Climate Kids to read more about global warming and the changes you can make at home to help prevent climate change.

After that, Year 3 became palaeontologists, exploring fossils and using pollen samples to investigate how the earth’s climate has changed over millions of years . For more information and activities to try at home, click here.

After lunch, Year 6 became environmental planners and used maps to discover how finding out about the past can help us to predict the future. To find out more about environmental planners, click here. Year 5 and 6 also looked at maps to see how Longbenton has changed over the last two centuries.
