Aerospace engineers design, build and maintain aircraft, spacecraft, satellites, and missiles. They may be involved in creating and testing prototypes, researching ways to make fuel efficient parts, developing weapons or navigations systems and supervising the fitting of aircraft or spacecraft and their components.

Astronaut

Astronauts are trained by different space agencies such as NASA in order to command, pilot or serve as a crew member aboard spacecraft and the International Space Station. While in space, as well as exercising for around two and a half hours a day, astronauts are responsible for maintaining the air filters, oxygen production systems, water and waste disposal systems. They must also replace worn or broken parts of the spacecraft. Astronauts carry out scientific experiments and research while in space and transfer data and reports to Earth via satellite.

Astrophysicist

An astrophysicist is a scientist who researches the principles of light, motion, and natural forces in order to gain an understanding underlying properties of the cosmos. They use theoretical and observational physics and chemistry to study the Sun, stars, galaxies and planets. Most astrophysicists specialise in a particular theory or phenomenon such as the origins and evolution of the solar system, black holes, the origin of cosmic rays or the development and extinction of stars.

Power Plant Operator

Power plant operators manage and maintain the machinery that generates electricity. This may be produced from hydroelectric energy, solar or wind power, nuclear energy, coal or gas. Power plant operators regulate and distribute the power amongst the generators. They monitor the voltage and electricity flow from the plant to meet fluctuating customer demands throughout the day.

Network Engineer

Network engineers are involved in the installing, maintaining, servicing and repair of computer data and communication systems. They can be involved in installing new software and hardware as well as creating user accounts and dealing with permissions and passwords for networks.

Control Systems Engineer

A control systems engineer designs and creates a set of devices that regulates systems, so basically a system that controls a system. Control systems are found for example, in the quality control of products, weapons systems, transportation systems, power systems, space technology and robotics. Control systems engineers design and manage the systems that guide and monitor machinery, usually using electronics or computers. They are also responsible for fixing malfunctions and analysing and researching designs.

Nuclear Engineer

Nuclear engineers design, build, maintain and decommission nuclear power plants. Their work involves measuring and monitoring radiation levels, ensuring the plant meets legal requirements for safety and security, supervising power station technicians and planning safe methods of nuclear waste disposal. They maintain the systems which transfer the electricity from the generators to the outside world and design ways to improve the efficiency of nuclear power plants.

Live Sound Engineer

A live sound engineer works at live events to make sure the sound is of appropriate value and high quality. Live sound engineers work in music, theatres, conferences, sports and other events that require sound projection. They work with producers to identify places where changes in sound level are required. Sound engineers are responsible for pre-recording sound effects needed, the wireless microphones used and the sound that performers hear on their monitors during a live event.

Acoustics Engineer

Acoustics engineers are concerned with the science of sound and noise vibration. They are involved in designing and constructing buildings where sound improvement or noise reduction is a major priority. This could be the construction of sports stadiums and recording studios to improve how sound carries, but may also look at reducing noise interference for local residents. Acoustics engineers assess the noise impact of any construction to ensure there is minimum impact. Some acoustics engineers are involved in designing medical acoustic equipment such as ultra-scans.

Medical physicists specialise in the healthcare profession. They work on developing new machines and technologies to help within the field of medicine. They look at making new systems to help investigate patient’s illnesses and conditions. They also look at making sure equipment within hospitals is safe and kept up to.
