16th February 2022 EYFS Marine Engineers

Today children in Reception and Nursery became marine engineers and investigated floating and sinking. To try a simple floating and sinking activity at home, using only tin foil and coins, visit our NUSTEM at home Foil Boats page.

Wednesday 19th January Year 5 Underneath the Ice

Today Year 5 have been finding out about what happens underneath the ice in Antarctica. They then wrote their own poem about this. To Find out more and read some poems by children in other schools, visit our Underneath the Ice website page. You may even find their poems there soon!

Friday 14th January 2022 EYFS Glaciologists

Today Nursery and Reception children became Glaciologists and investigated melting ice. Why not try our NUSTEM melting ice activity at home? All you need is some ice cubes and bowls to put them in.

14th March 2019 Year 2 Systems Engineers and Year 5 Medical Physics

Today Year 2  became systems engineers, designing, creating. testing and improving marble runs to see how long they could get the marble to roll for. To find out more about systems engineering and to discover some fun activities to try at home, click here.

Year 5 found out about careers in medical physics and where physics and technology is used to look inside the human body. To find out more, click here.

12th March 2019 Year 3 and 4 Geologists

Today Year 3 and Year 4 became geologists, observing and investigating meteorites which are rocks from space. To find out more about geology, click here.

Barley Mow STEM Week

Wow – what a brilliant week NUSTEM have had at Barley Mow. We’ve been so impressed the all the budding scientists and engineers we’ve met.

Here’s a run-down of what we got up to…

Monday – Coding robots with Y1, meteorite handling with Y4 and Marine Engineering with Y5.

Wednesday – Botany with Y2, Medical Physics with Y6 and a KS2 Family Workshop.

Thursday – Marine engineering with Y3 and a KS2 Family Workshop.

Thanks again for everyone involved, we’ll be back in your school soon!

Barley Mow – Science Week

Wow! What a week it’s been. Everyone in Barley Mow has been involved in one of our workshops or assemblies.

  • Year 1 explored floating and sinking and learnt about Naval Architecture.
  • Year 2 became Botanists and observed Venus Flytraps with USB microscopes.
  • Year 3 learning all about volcanology – the science of volcanoes.
  • Year 4 became aeronautical engineers, designing and build paper gliders.
  • Year 5 built mangonels (catapults) whilst learning about mechanical engineering and forces.
  • Year 6 explored the world of medical physics using X-rays, infrared and ultrasound.

We also worked with families in out automata workshop!

Thanks to everyone at Barley Mow for working so brilliantly this week – we’re looking forward to coming back soon!
