6th July: The Civil Engineer

We’ve been building bridges with Year 6 today using K’nex! It was great to see so many different designs!

Civil engineers design and build bridges of all different shapes and sizes – just look at the bridges spanning the River Tyne to see how different bridges can be!

Why don’t you have a go at building a bridge at home? If you don’t have any K’nex,  try using dry spaghetti and sellotape instead or any other materials you have around the house! Be creative!

23 March: Naval Architecture

Goat on a Boat 05What a busy morning Kenton Bar’s Year 1 classes have had. We’ve been exploring floating and sinking with a little help from the youngest Billy Goats Gruff. We’ve designed, tested, taken measurements and redesigned to ensure that the goat made it safely across the river.

Now you’re back home, follow these steps for more floating and sinking fun:

  1. Go into the kitchen and find some aluminium (tin) foil.
  2. Build another boat and make it float in the sink.
  3. Test out your boat by adding 1p coins to it – home many will it take before it sinks??
  4. Try out a different boat design, change the shape of your foil and test it out again. Is it better or worse than your first design?

May 19: Bubbles

By blowing air through a straw into a dish of bubble fluid we could create a mountain of bubbles, boasting a rainbow of coloursJoe’s been in today blowing soap bubbles of all sizes with reception. All sizes, but not all shapes – and maybe you can describe why that’s the case?

See the Think Physics Bubbles page for more things to do and explore.

9 March: Botany and Meteorites

Magnifying flytrap-1650thinToday I’ve been busy at Kenton Bar Primary School

This morning Year 2 became brilliant botanists and you can find out all about it by clicking here.

In the afternoon, Y5 were exploring rocks from space – meteorites. Click here to find out more!

1st December: Volcanoes and Medical Imaging

Joe has been in today 04. Lavaflow_sampling_2investigating volcanoes with Year 4.

You’ll have dribbled honey down slopes and – let’s admit it – left some of that honey on our samples of volcanic rocks with your sticky fingers. So tomorrow, Joe will be washing rocks in the Think Lab sink. Not to worry.

For a reminder of what you studied, and some activities to continue your exploring at home, see our Volcano Workshop page.
