NUSTEM Loans Boxes Spring 2023

This term children at Walbottle Village Primary have been using NUSTEM loans boxes. NUSTEM loans boxes are linked to STEM careers and contain original objects and replicas that can be handled and used as part of classroom activities.  While using the resources in the boxes, children get the opportunity to try out and explore some of the skills, techniques, equipment and ideas that STEM professionals use on a day-to-day basis.

Tuesday 4th February Year 5 Astronomers and KS2 Family Wind Turbine Engineers

Today Year 5 became astronomers and found out about the development of the telescope throughout history as well as about the role of women in astronomy. They discovered what stars are made from and how astronomers know this by analysing the light they produce. To find out more about astronomy and to try some activities at home, click here.

After school, KS2 families became wind turbine engineers, designing the blades for wind turbines and testing them to see which shape would turn the turbine the quickest. Click here for more information and activities.

Thursday 9th January 2020 Year 1 Naval Architects

Wednesday 11th December Year 5 Cryptographers

Today Year 5 came into our Think Lab at Northumbria University to become cryptographers. This involved encrypting and decrypting messages and discovering how this keeps us safe online.

Thursday 3rd October Y3 Palaeontologists

This afternoon Year 3 became palaeontologists, exploring fossils and using pollen samples to investigate how the earth’s climate has changed over millions of years . For more information and activities to try at home, click here.

7th June 2019 Y6 Medical Physics

3rd June 2019 Y5 Environmental Planners and Key Stage 2 Family Workshop

Year 5 became environmental planners and used maps to discover how finding out about the past can help us to predict the future. To find out more about environmental planners, click here. 19th March 2019 Year 3 Palaeontologists and Key Stage 1 Family Workshop
