Systems Engineer

Systems engineers design and create systems to meet specific needs by combining and integrating people, components and processes into a whole system and ensuring each of those components work correctly. Systems are used in industrial processes to increase output, but a toilet, a refrigerator, an air conditioner, an automatic iron, a car and even the human body are all systems. Larger systems include moveable bridges, manufacturing plants or the International Space Station.

Evolutionary Biologist

Evolutionary biologists are specifically interested in knowing more about the evolution of plants and animals. They seek to discover more about the history of life on earth, how organisms have changed and developed over time and the causes of this evolution. They cover a vast range of work from looking at DNA in the lab to studying how individual species have evolved in a particular ecosystem.

Mechatronic Engineer

Mechatronic engineers combine aspects of both mechanical engineering and robotic engineering into one discipline, called mechatronic engineering. They create smart machines that have an awareness of their surroundings for many different purposes and industries. Mechatronic engineers are involved in the entire development of smart machines, from design and testing to manufacture. Mechatronic engineers may work in a lab, processing plant or engineering office. They may be involved developing in robotics, bio-engineering, nanotechnology or in manufacturing unmanned vehicles or medical machines.

Marine Engineer

Marine engineers are involved in the designing, building, testing, maintaining and repairing of boats and ships as well as underwater craft such as submarines. They are responsible for the internal systems of a ship, such as the propulsion, electrical, refrigeration and steering systems. They can be involved in work such as marine surveying, drilling underwater for oil and gas and in the building of offshore platforms.

Astrophysicist

An astrophysicist is a scientist who researches the principles of light, motion, and natural forces in order to gain an understanding underlying properties of the cosmos. They use theoretical and observational physics and chemistry to study the Sun, stars, galaxies and planets. Most astrophysicists specialise in a particular theory or phenomenon such as the origins and evolution of the solar system, black holes, the origin of cosmic rays or the development and extinction of stars.

Control Systems Engineer

A control systems engineer designs and creates a set of devices that regulates systems, so basically a system that controls a system. Control systems are found for example, in the quality control of products, weapons systems, transportation systems, power systems, space technology and robotics. Control systems engineers design and manage the systems that guide and monitor machinery, usually using electronics or computers. They are also responsible for fixing malfunctions and analysing and researching designs.

Live Sound Engineer

A live sound engineer works at live events to make sure the sound is of appropriate value and high quality. Live sound engineers work in music, theatres, conferences, sports and other events that require sound projection. They work with producers to identify places where changes in sound level are required. Sound engineers are responsible for pre-recording sound effects needed, the wireless microphones used and the sound that performers hear on their monitors during a live event.

Solid State Physicist

Solid-state physicists study rigid matter, or solids using quantum mechanics, crystallography, electromagnetism, and metallurgy. They study how the large-scale properties of solid materials result from their atomic-scale properties. Solid-state physicists study the mechanical and thermal behaviour of solids including the thermal conductivity, the amount of energy that must be absorbed by a solid to produce a given change in temperature and the melting points of crystals. It is the electrical properties of a solid that are of most interest, in particular its electrical conductivity. This knowledge is used in the production of transistors and semi-conductors.

Particle Physicist

A particle physicist is someone who looks at subatomic elements of matter, radiation and subatomic particles to discover how they exist, interact and shape the natural world. They seek to identify the most simple objects of which matter is composed of, and to understand the integral forces that drive their interactions and combinations. Experimental particle physicists design, build and develop the technology required to discover new particles beyond the Standard Model such as sensors, detectors and superconducting magnets. They use machines such as the Large Hadron Collider to find particles such as the Higgs boson. Theoretical particle physicists develop the advanced mathematical quantum theories which underpin the observed physics.

Chemical Physicist

Chemical physicists study reactions and how two fields can interact with each other. They examine the structure of chemical particles, such as ions, molecules and polymers and explain why certain enzymes function due to their molecular shape. They watch how particle structure is altered when it goes through various chemical processes, such as combustion or sublimation. Chemical physicists test other reactions including energy-flow or the states of quantum particles.
