Physicist

A physicist is a specialist in the science that deals with matter and energy and their interactions. Physicists can work in theoretical analysis, where they develop ideas using computer simulations and mathematical modelling techniques to make predictions and explain behaviours. They may also be involved in experimental research where they design experiments to test theories. There are many areas physicist may be involved in such as developing new medical instruments and treatments, exploring robotics and artificial intelligence or investigating new ways to generate power.

Environmental Restoration Planner

An environmental restoration planner conducts laboratory and field tests to monitor the environment and investigate sources of pollution, including those affecting health. Their work includes inspecting establishments, including public places and businesses to ensure that there are no environmental, health, or safety hazards and setting up and maintaining equipment used to monitor pollution levels. They will collect samples of air, soil and water for laboratory analysis and perform scientific tests to identify and measure the levels of pollutants in these samples.

Geophysicist

A geophysicist is someone who studies the Earth using gravity, magnetic, electrical, and seismic methods. They assist the oil and gas industries by creating a picture of what lies below the earth’s surface by collecting data on seismic waves, which move through and around the earth. Geophysicists are responsible for controlling the quality of the seismic data collected and interpreting it in order to create maps of the build-up of hydrocarbons. They examine the physical properties of rocks, as well as gathering data in order evaluate areas for environmental hazards or to build dams and construction sites.

Product and process development scientists improve the efficiency and profitability of manufactured products. Process development scientists optimise the performance of manufacturing systems. They identify and develop new processes for product manufacture and implement process controls to ensure the products are of a high quality. Product development scientists work with research scientists to develop new ideas and scientific discoveries to be used in the manufacture of new products. They also develop and improve existing products.

Bioprocessing Engineer

A bioprocessing engineer analyses and develops the systems used to manufacture biological products. They usually work in agricultural research and development companies, food processing plants, biotechnology firms, alternative fuel manufacturers, and pharmaceutical companies. A bioprocessing engineer works to improve efficiency, worker safety, and product quality. A lab engineer experiments with different biochemicals, such as those used in pharmaceuticals, observing their effects on bacteria or viruses under a microscope. A bioprocessing engineer in a manufacturing plant analyses the existing machinery and techniques used to make products to determine if they can be modified to increase production.
