18th May: The Volcanologist

We have been working with Y6 at Burnside exploring the incredible world of volcanoes. To find out more about what we got up to click here.

11th May: The Aeronautical Engineer

We’ve been in Year 5 today making things that fly! Well… not quite. We’ve been making and testing gliders! Can you describe the difference between flying and gliding?

Check out our Flight activity page to try making some gliders at home.

5th May: The Sound Engineer

Today we welcomed Year 4 into our Think Lab to investigate Sound! What did you learn about how sound travels?

If you’d like to find out more about Sound have a look here for some sound based activities and a video.

3rd May: Bubbles

By blowing air through a straw into a dish of bubble fluid we could create a mountain of bubbles, boasting a rainbow of coloursWe’ve been in today blowing soap bubbles of all sizes with reception. All sizes, but not all shapes – and maybe you can describe why that’s the case?

See the NUSTEM Bubbles page for more things to do and explore.

2nd May: Bubbles

23 March: Naval Architecture

Goat on a Boat 05What a busy morning Kenton Bar’s Year 1 classes have had. We’ve been exploring floating and sinking with a little help from the youngest Billy Goats Gruff. We’ve designed, tested, taken measurements and redesigned to ensure that the goat made it safely across the river.

Now you’re back home, follow these steps for more floating and sinking fun:

  1. Go into the kitchen and find some aluminium (tin) foil.
  2. Build another boat and make it float in the sink.
  3. Test out your boat by adding 1p coins to it – home many will it take before it sinks??
  4. Try out a different boat design, change the shape of your foil and test it out again. Is it better or worse than your first design?

Barley Mow – Science Week

Wow! What a week it’s been. Everyone in Barley Mow has been involved in one of our workshops or assemblies.

  • Year 1 explored floating and sinking and learnt about Naval Architecture.
  • Year 2 became Botanists and observed Venus Flytraps with USB microscopes.
  • Year 3 learning all about volcanology – the science of volcanoes.
  • Year 4 became aeronautical engineers, designing and build paper gliders.
  • Year 5 built mangonels (catapults) whilst learning about mechanical engineering and forces.
  • Year 6 explored the world of medical physics using X-rays, infrared and ultrasound.

We also worked with families in out automata workshop!

Thanks to everyone at Barley Mow for working so brilliantly this week – we’re looking forward to coming back soon!

12 January: The Naval Architect (with goats)

Chillingham Road Engineering Week

Wow, what a week Dan and I have had. Between us we’ve seen the whole school. On Monday, we explored magnetism with Reception and then on the afternoon Year 1 became Naval Architects, designing and building boats. Find out more by clicking here.

We came back on Thursday to work with Y5 where we built some incredible structure out of kNex. Our civil engineering skills went, almost literally, through the roof!

Finally on Friday we spent the morning with Y3 exploring the world of Aeronautical Engineering. Dans put together a page related to flight which you can find here.
